DUPUY – DUPUY : Military heritage of America (előszó)
The very essence of military leadership rests upon a thorough knowledge and understanding of the strategic and tactical lessons gained upon the battlefields of the past—lessons which ofttimes have been learned at immense loss in blood and treasure. To serve this purpose the authors, two distinguished soldiers of the United States Army, father and son, have undertaken to prepare a comprehensive treatise, and by so doing are rendering a distinct service to our military leadership of the future.
Throughout the span of recorded military history weapons have progressively changed with the opening of new avenues of scientific knowledge, and to cope with such changes new tactics have had to be progressively devised. But certain fundamentals to military success have remained unchanged. Foremost among these is the requisite that there be preserved to the soldier unimpaired the will to win. He must fully understand the national objectives for which his sacrifice is asked. He must be assured that the diplomat, once he has failed to achieve such objectives by the normal process of diplomacy, will not be entrusted with the strategy designed to enforce them by war. He must have full faith that once his country has committed him to battle it will in vincibly support him until victory has been won.
All this is in the American tradition. It must be refortified if American arms in the future are to successfully meet the tests of war—if our military heritage from the past is to guide the generations of the future.
