HARBOTTLE – BRUCE : Dictionary of battles (fülszöveg)

At last, an up-to-date compendium of all the important battles of all the major wars throughout history.

The Dictionary of Battles is an invaluable reference work. Originally compiled by Thomas Benfield Harbottle around the turn of the century, it has now been updated by George Bruce to include all twentieth-century military operations from the Boer Wars through Vietnam. For comprehensiveness, the Dictionary of Battles also includes the sieges, raids, and relatively minor actions of important wars, because these tactical moves very often led to the main battles.

Each entry provides the essential data: the war or campaign of which the battle was a part; the date it began; who commanded how many men on each side; the tactics and sometimes the weapons employed; who won; the casualties; and where it could be determined, the ultimate outcome. In addition, Mr. Bruce has carefully cross-referenced the Dictionary to indicate, where appropriate, other battles associated with each entry.

Library Journal judged the book "unusually complete," and called the Dictionary of Battles "a useful document, essential for the military student and buff." In this updated and revised form, it will also prove invaluable to the historian, because so much of history, alas, is a record of men at war with each other.

A selection of the Military Book Club.
