STRACHAN : European armies and the conduct of war (fülszöveg)

The theory and practice of land warfare in Europe since 1700 form the subject of Hew Strachan's work. Recent military history has tended to focus on the relationship between armies and society and, at the same time, but less conspicuously, there has been much original research on the subject of the conduct of war. But the two approaches should not be viewed independently. The social and political influences which shape armies will, after all, also mould the attitudes of those armies to warfare. Dr Strachan therefore sets out to look at warfare in the context of social and political change.

He also tells a story of technical innovation, of the mounting pace of industrialisation, and of its impact on warfare. These themes are examined through the eyes of the major theorists of the day: the acceptance of their writings was often attributable to the degree to which they conformed to prevailing concepts.

Discussed here are the key issues of modem warfare—the contribution of Clausewitz, the two world wars, and—most important of all for the contemporary reader—nuclear deterrence. By interpreting its subject matter as widely as possible, European Armies and the Conduct of War considers the roles of air power and the impact of the United States on European military developments.
