HOLMES : Basic Training (fülszöveg)

"Basic Training is a factory. We feed a kid into a hopper, turn a crank, and seven weeks later we spit out a trooper."

— an officer

"Basic is very competitive for a trainee. You want to prove to others, and yourself, that you can do it. And you feel good when you do. That's the best thing about Basic: feeling good about yourself."

— a trainee

For over 50 years, Basic Training in the U.S. Army has been an important rite of passage for America's young men. Now, the draft is a thing of the past (since 1973 it's been an all-volunteer army). And there are women in the "new" army; they are trained for all but the most dangerous combat roles.

From the moment the nervous trainee steps off the bus to the pomp and ceremony of graduation seven weeks later, this book tells what life is like in today's army. Told mostly in the words of the drill sergeants, the officers, and especially the trainees themselves, it follows one squad through the first bewildering days of orientation, the rigors of the obstacle course, hand-to-hand combat training, bivouacs, push-ups, throwing a live hand grenade, firing a machine gun, the rifle range, the tear gas chamber, the night march, guard duty, KP—all under the watchful eyes of the ever-present drill sergeants.

Today, many people join the army because the pay is good. Others like the opportunities for travel and adventure. Some join because they want the job-training courses the army offers. But no matter why they join, one thing is still the same: converting civilians into skilled and disciplined soldiers is what Basic Training is all about.
