KILBOURNE : Escape and evasion (fülszöveg)

Exciting true-adventure stories of heroic airmen and classic air rescue missions in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Southeast Asia.

These dramatic stories of men who survived flaming or otherwise battle-damaged planes, or crash landings in hostile countries; men who evaded the enemy on the ground and in the air, and escaped from captivity under tremendous odds are thrilling reading. They also serve to demonstrate the techniques, principles, and tactics that are taught in the specific training programs throughout the world today—the program embodied in its acronym, SERE:

Survival
Escape
Resistance
Evasion

The adventures have a wide range, from Col. William F. Middledorf's escape in World War II, using fake identity papers, disguises, forged medical certificates—and sheer guts—to the famous "Escape from Davao" of Lt. Col. William E. Dyess, who survived the Bataan Death March and a year of barbaric treatment in a Japanese PW camp before his incredible escape. There is "Mr. SERE," in Korea, who ejected from an exploding jet, resisted intense interrogation, escaped and evaded across hostile terrain only to be recaptured, and finally, aided by an enemy soldier, escaped again and was rescued by helicopter. And there is the "Piggyback" rescue behind enemy lines by Lt. Royce Priest in World War II—a rescue which Gen. Jimmy Doolittle said had a one-in-a-million chance of succeeding. There are many other exciting accounts of the adventures of our airmen in Escape and Evasion, and through the exploits of these men, writes Lt. Col. Jimmy W. Kilbourne: "We trace the proud tradition which was established by the new breed of combatants in World War I and passed on to airmen in World War II, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Each generation of fliers thereafter have, in their own way, drawn strength from this tradition; modified the concepts, techniques, and principles involved; and contributed significantly to the SERE courses throughout the world."
