LUTTWAK – HOROWITZ : The Israeli Army (fülszöveg)

This is the extraordinary story of the men and ideas behind the Israeli Army. The book studies the development of the Army from an ill-equipped and improvised force in 1948 into one of the best-organized and most successful armies in the world. Although the Egyptian offensive of October 1973 caught the Israeli forces by surprise and unprepared, the weeks that followed clearly supported the conclusions of this book. The authors were both in Israel during the war and have thus been able, within this major study, to produce a full account of the 1973 war in the proper historical and military context.

The book follows the Army from 1948 when the improvised forces of the Haganah succeeded against the armies of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan through a period of weakness and demoralization in the early 1950s. It describes the development of Moshe Dayan's new army after 1953, and the enormous advance of the early sixties in technology, strategy and training. It examines the military achievements of the June war in 1967, the subsequent problems of adapting to a defensive strategy, and finally the war of October 1973. The Israeli Army focuses both on general strategic problems and the experiences of particular branches and individuals, showing how the Israeli Army's accomplishments have been achieved through technical and strategic skills combined with an almost philosophical comprehension of its essential objectives. 35 halftones; 35 maps and figures.
