A Magyar Honvédség 170 éve = 170 years of the Hungarian Defence Forces (előszó)
Móga János altábornagy, a néhány nappal korábban kinevezett hadseregparancsnok, akit a vita hevében gyávának és hazaárulónak neveztek, dühösen akasztotta le magáról kardját, amelyet a sukorói református templom úrasztalára letéve, visszaadta tisztségét. A fő kérdés az volt, támadni, vagy elkerülni a csatát. Katonaszakmai és politikai érvek feszültek egymásnak, végül Batthyány Lajos miniszterelnök felszólalása juttatta néhány órával később megegyezésre a feleket: támadni nem támadnak, de ha kell, felveszik a harcot Jelačić háromszoros túlerőben lévő, kiválóan képzett seregével. Móga János altábornagy visszavette kardját, és másnap, 1848. szeptember 29-én Pákozdnál első győzelmére vezette a magyar honvédsereget.
A pákozdi győzelem jelentőségét maga Móga János altábornagy is helyesen látta már egy-két nappal az ütközet után irt jelentésében: „Ámbár seregünk egy teljes győzelmet aratott ki, minthogy magát első állásában megtartotta, mégis katonai nézetből ezen ütközet eredménye csekély; ellenben annál nagyobb erkölcsi hatást tett az új csapatra, a mennyiben helyét első megütközése alkalmával diadalmasan meg tudta tartani.”
Így született meg 170 évvel ezelőtt a magyar honvédség, s lett az 1848–1849-es szabadságharc emléke és példája meghatározó örökség. Az volt az első alkalom, ami a haza védelmében a reguláris hadak mellett felvonult önkéntes haderő is. Itt mutatkozott meg először ennek a közösségnek az ereje. A forradalom eszmeisége, a nemzeti identitás megjelenítése példát és viszonyítási pontot adott a későbbi korok honvédeinek. Ma is úgy tekintünk rá, mint követendő irányra, amely meghatározó az idén fennállásának 170. évfordulóját ünneplő Magyar Honvédség számára.
A magyar honvédség históriájában számtalan alkalommal kellett a katonaszakmai érvek és a politika közötti kényes egyensúlyt megtalálni. Ez is éppúgy része történetének, mint a diadalmas, győztes csaták és az elvesztett háborúk vagy a hadsereg többszöri le-, majd újjáépítése. A 170 év alatt megannyi változás és kihívás érte a magyar katonákat, de elszántságuk, hivatástudatuk változatlan maradt, és korokon átívelő példaként szolgálnak ma is.
Történelmi példák tucatjai bizonyítják, hogy erős ország nem képzelhető el erős honvédség nélkül. Szükséges, hogy az állam polgárai tudják és érezzék, mindenkor, minden körülmény között számíthatnak a katonák szolgálatára, segítségére. Az elődök példáját követve büszkén mondhatjuk, hogy a mai Magyar Honvédségre, a katonákra számíthat az ország, annak minden lakója.
170 év történetét foglalja magába ez az impozáns kötet, nagy ívű tablót festve a magyar honvédség dicsőséges és olykor hányattatottsággal teli útjáról. Történelmet írunk azonban napjainkban is, amikor a fejlesztéseink terén hatalmas lehetőségek előtt állunk. Ezek is a katonákról szólnak, értük vannak. Felelősségünk, hogy a magyar katonák legszebb hagyományaira építve megújítsuk eszközeinket, és igazi, 21. századi Magyar Honvédséget hozzunk létre. Ezt a célt szolgálja a „Zrínyi 2026” Honvédelmi és Haderőfejiesztési Program, az elmúlt negyedszázad legkomplexebb és legátfogóbb fejlesztése, amely a Magyar Honvédség minden részét, fegyvernemét, képességét érinti. Megvalósításához rendelkezésre áll minden – ahogy mondani szokták: pénz, paripa, fegyver –, azaz kormányzati akarat, eltökéltség és pénzügyi forrás. Tartozunk annyival hazánknak, elődeinknek, akik vérüket áldozták Magyarországért, a magyar nép szabadságáért és függetlenségéért, valamint a ma és a jövő katonáinak, hogy sikerre visszük terveinket. Ezek eredményeként a Magyar Honvédség Közép-Európa meghatározó haderejévé válhat.
E kötet méltó emléket állít mindazon katonáknak, akik a Magyar Honvédség történetét formálták háborúban és békében egyaránt. Nem szabad azonban elfelejteni, hogy a katonánál – különösen háborúk idején – senki sem vágyja jobban a békét. Katonáink helytállása az ország biztonságának záloga. A Magyar Honvédség minden katonája ma is azon dolgozik, hogy megőrizze szabadságunkat, függetlenségünket, továbbá azt a békét és biztonságot, amelyben mindenki háborítatlanul élheti és gyarapíthatja életét, nevelheti gyermekeit.

Lieutenant-General János Móga, the recently appointed commander-in-chief of the honvéd army – who had been called a coward and traitor of the homeland in the heat of debate – angrily detached his sword, and, by putting it on the communion table of the Protestant church in Sukoró, resigned his position. The main question was whether to attack or to avoid the battle. Military professional arguments were pitted against political ones, and finally, a few hours later, acting on a speech delivered by Lajos Batthyány, the two sides came to the agreement that they would not attack but, if necessary, they would give battle against Jelačić' excellently trained army, which had threefold numerical superiority. Lieutenant-General János Móga took his sword back, and the next day, on September 29, 1848, he led the Hungarian honvéd army to its first victory at Pákozd.
Lieutenant-General János Móga correctly assessed the significance of the victory at Pákozd when, in a report prepared a couple of days after the battle, he wrote that "Although our army has won a complete victory, as it kept itself in its first position, from a military viewpoint, the result of this battle is insubstantial; nevertheless, it has very much raised the morale of the newly formed army, which has been able to stand its ground victoriously during its first battle."
This is how the Hungarian Defence Forces were born 170 years ago, and how the memory and example of the 1848–49 war of independence became a determining heritage. That was the first occasion when the all-volunteer force were deployed in defence of the homeland besides the regular army. This was the first time that the power of this community was shown. The spirit of the revolution, the display of national identity gave an example and a point of reference for Hungarian soldiers of later ages. Even today, we look at it as a direction to be followed, which is crucial to the Hungarian Defence Forces that are celebrating their 170th anniversary this year.
In the history of the Hungarian Defence Forces, a delicate balance had to be found on countless occasions between arguments of military profession and politics. This forms a part of their history, just like the victorious battles and lost wars, or the repeated downsizing and rebuilding of the armed forces on several occasions. During the 170 years, Hungarian soldiers faced a lot of changes and challenges, but their determination and sense of vocation have remained unchanged, and serve as examples throughout the ages.
Dozens of historical examples show that a strong country cannot exist without strong armed forces. It is necessary that all citizens of the state know and feel that they can count on the soldiers' service and assistance at all times, under every circumstance. Following the example of our predecessors, we can proudly say that all the citizens of the country can count on today's Hungarian Defence Forces, on the soldiers.
This impressive book contains the history of 170 years, and gives a big-picture tableaux of the glorious and sometimes checkered road of the Hungarian Defence Forces. However, we are making history even today, s we are on the threshold of huge opportunities in the field of developments. These opportunities, too, are about and for the soldiers. Our respolsibility is to renew our assets, building on the best traditions of Hungarian soldiers, and create the true 21st-century Hungarian Defence Forces. This goal is served by the "Zrínyi 2026" National Defence and Armed Forces Development Program, which is the most complex and comprehensive development project in the last 25 years and affects all parts, branches and capabilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces. We have everything available for its implementation – money, horse and weapon, as the Hungarian saying goes (everything is ready to roll) – that is, our government is willing and prepared, and has the necessary financial resources. We must make our plans a success – this is what we owe to our homeland, to our predecessors who sacrificed their blood for Hungary, for the freedom and independence of the Hungarian people, and to the soldiers of the present and the future. As a result, the Hungarian Defence Forces can become a definitive force in Central Europe.
This book worthily commemorates all those soldiers who have shaped the history of the Hungarian Defence Forces in wartime and peacetime. We must not, however, forget that the soldier, above all others, prays for peace, especially in wartime. The professional performance of our soldiers is the guarantee of the security of Hungary. Today, all soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Forces are working to preserve our freedom, our independence and that peace and security in which everybody can live, prosper and bring up their children in an undisturbed way.
