CHILDS – POPPLEWELL : The Stasi (fülszöveg)

The Stasi, the East German security and intelligence services, were among the most successful in the world in the Cold War years, 1950–1989. They had their informers in virtually every factory, office, military unit, school, university, hospital and church behind the Berlin Wall. Colleagues informed on each other, so did husbands and wives. Stasi chief, General Mielke, prided himself on this situation. Abroad, the Stasi, under Marcus Wolf, successfully penetrated every political party, every key ministry and security organ in West Germany. They also got their agents into NATO. Many of these agents remained secure until the archives were opened after the collapse of the East German regime. Some remain undiscovered. Now two British experts tell the story of the Stasi from their origins in the dreaded Soviet Cheka to their abolition in 1989. Their work is based an long years of personal experience, archival research, published sources and interviews with former members of the Stasi, their victims, and members of the German parliament from all parties who lived under the shadow of the Stasi as citizens of the German Democratic Republic. Anonymous street interviews were also conducted in several East German towns. What emerges is a fascinating yet frightening story of unbridled power, misguided idealism, treachery, widespread opportunism and lonely courage. The legacy of mistrust and destroyed human relations remains. This is the first account of the Stasi to appear in English.
