Romania gothica II (ajánló)

The year 2010 marked the 1600th anniversary of Athaulf's election as king of the Visigoths. Athaulf's activity thus provided the incentive for historians and archaeologists to explore questions of cultural exchange, cultural identity and the many forms of interaction between Romans and Barbarians, as well as the key issues of European society, politics and culture in the earlier fifth century in the very areas of Pannonia, Italy, Gaul and Spain in which he was once active.

Most of the studies in the present volume look at the process of late antique transformation from a Barbarian perspective and attempt to fit the diverse strands of evidence – ranging from the historical and the archaeological to the linguistic – into current research on late antiquity. The theoretical background to this academic endeavour was the realisation that the study of antiquity should also encompass the periphery of the late antique world, and that it should extend to research on the political and cultural history of the political centres and tribal kingdoms that emerged on the fringes of the ancient world. The transformation of the Roman world under Barbarian influences is attested in all aspects of life and was especially dynamic in the geographic and cultural frontier zones in the Early Middle Ages.
