BENECKE : Germany in the Thirty Years War (ajánló)

The German Empire was the central arena of the complex and momentous struggle, known as the Thirty Years War, that convulsed preindustrial Europe. Its immediate impact on the population took the form of recruitment, billeting, war taxes, occupation and demobilization; but there was also the material and psychological damage – of fire and famine, plunder, migration and exile, disease and death.

This book examines the crisis in early modern Germany from contemporary sources. The documents, most of them translated for the first time, have been chosen to highlight the economic, social and religious dimensions of the conflict as experienced by the people who lived through it. The selection also traces the political background to the war, from its origins in the Treaty of Augsburg in 1555 to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

This is the only collection of documents in English on the Thirty Years War. Concise and thematically arranged, it will be essential for everyone seeking an up-to-date guide to this controversial episode in European history.
