MULLER : The darkest day: 1814 (fülszöveg)

When Congress declared war on Great Britain in 1812, Americans called it President Madison's War. But when British ships began blockading the coast and British militia began pillaging the countryside, the states roused to action—only to give ground in one small, humiliating defeat after another for the next two years.

Then, on August 24, 1814, American pride suffered a great blow: twice in one day, at Bladensburg, Maryland, a British army made up of Wellington veterans put to flight the raw American militia. Worse, they marched into Washington and burned and looted the defenseless capital.

Charles G. Muller explains the political crisis that precipitated our "second war of independence" and describes the land and naval engagements in the Washington-Baltimore campaign that led to the disastrous Bladensburg battles. His account culminates with the heroic American defense of Baltimore a few weeks later—a victory which not only contributed greatly to a swift peace, but also inspired our national anthem.

Mr. Muller has used official documents, manuscripts, and reminiscences and eyewitness accounts from both sides of the conflict as source material for a narrative that is detailed, accurate, and colorful.
