BLAKEWAY : The Falklands War (ajánló)

In the early hours of 2 April 1982 an Argentine invasion force landed on the Falkland Islands. After a short and fierce battle the small British garrison surrendered. For the first time in many years British sovereign territory had been seized by force.

The news of the successful invasion was greeted with rapture by the people of Argentina: But in Britain, Mrs Thatcher's Conservative government faced disaster. The loss of the Falklands was a national humiliation and only the successful recapture of the Islands could ensure the Prime Minister's survival. Three days later a task force set sail from British ports to recapture the Falklands. In just over two months Argentina was defeated, and the Falkland Islands returned to British rule.

THE FALKLANDS WAR, which accompanies Channel Four's major series on the war, tells the extraordinary story of what has been called 'Britain's last imperial fandango'. Ten years on, politicians, generals and ordinary soldiers from both sides are able to speak out frankly for the first time. In doing so they make some startling revelations about the misunderstandings between Britain and Argentina which led to the conflict, and the extraordinary difficulties the British faced fighting so far from home.

Strikingly illustrated, this authoritative account shows how a minor dispute over a sparsely populated group of islands blew up into an international crisis in which more than 1,000 men died.
