HIRO : Secrets and lies (ajánló)

"God told me to strike at Al Qaida and I struck them, and then
He instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did."
–President George W. Bush to Palestinian Prime Minister
Mahmoud Abbas on June 4, 2003

The Anglo-American invasion of Iraq is a turning point in history. It is, undoubtedly, the single most important world event since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Just as that breakup ushered in a new era in world politics, the aftermath of the latest conflict–about to unleash assorted centrifugal forces in the Middle East and elsewhere–is set to give a new twist to the present global order dominated by the United States. Rather than secure U.S. hegemony in the Middle East, it could be a prelude to its downfall in the region.

How did this come to pass? Celebrated Middle East historian and journalist Dilip Hiro's epic SECRETS AND LIES describes in lucid and masterly detail the causes and courses of the invasion, weaving together the story of the covert war, starting in August 2002, with its conventional complement–operation "Iraqi Freedom"–providing a gripping military and political history that presents the conflict in a refreshingly new light. It illuminates the key role of neoconservative intellectuals around the Bush White House and dissects the leadership style of George Bush, showing how his own "personal relationship with God" was a driving force behind the war.

SECRETS AND LIES also lays bare the deliberate misinterpretations, spins, fabrications, and bullying that the Bush-Blair camp heaped on the Anglo-American peoples to justify the invasion (one of Blair's infamous dossiers plagiarized some of Hiro's own work on Iraq!). It also examines the dynamics of post-war Iraq where–much to the chagrin of the occupying forces–the deeply religious Shia majority has emerged as the pre-eminent force likely to ally with Iran, a member of Bush's "Axis of Evil."
