HUMMER : An infantryman's journal (fülszöveg)

AN INFANTRYMAN'S JOURNAL is a personal account of a life and career that in the course of twenty-four years spanned three wars—World War II, Korea and Vietnam. It is a dramatic story of Hummer's years in the United States Army from his day of enlistment as a Private on November 27th, 1942, to his retirement as a Major on November 30th, 1966. It is the story of an American soldier; how he lived the army life; of what he thought and why; of what he did in and to the Army; and what the Army did to him.

In these fascinating pages, the United States Army passes in review—Colonel William O. Darby's 1st Ranger Battalion, the First Special Service Forces, Infantry Replacement Training Center, 2d Armored Division, Fitzsimons Army Hospital, 2d Infantry Division, XXIVth Corps, the Tokyo Military Government Team, the 1st Cavalry Division, the 29th Infantry Regiment (Okinawa), 7th Infantry Division (Korea), 5th Infantry Division (Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania), Infantry School at Fort Benning, 8th Infantry Division (Fort Jackson), language school at Monterey, California, Military Assistance Advisory Group-Japan, Valley Forge General Hospital, Headquarters, Military District of Washington, Headquarters, Department of the Army, and Headquarters, U.S. Army Command—Vietnam.

Throughout his career, John Hummer kept a meticulous journal of the military life, first as a Ranger enlisted man in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, to Southern France and finally, England, and home. His journal includes the periods between wars, peacetime infantry assignments in preparation for the Korean Conflict, the lull following and finally an account of his tour in Vietnam. He describes what it was like to be a soldier during peacetime and during war—the privations of family life, the loss of friends in combat. It is a highly personal story but could be any soldier's story. He rose through the ranks, receiving a battlefield commission in Korea.

John Hummer has made the Army come to life with his journalistic skills. AN INFANTRYMAN'S JOURNAL is a memoir right from the firing lines of some of the most momentous and dramatic episodes of our recent military history.
