New dynamics in national strategy (fülszöveg)

The United States faces numerous challenges in today's complicated and constantly changing international arena. This masterful survey of opinions focuses on the political and economic issues of our times as they relate to our national security, and stresses that the problems confronting the nation will not be solved by military means, but by diplomacy and economic interdependence.

The book opens with the forum for debate on national security and includes ecological and economic interdependence as prime factors in developing the framework for explanation of security policy. Several contemporary challenges to the power of the United States, with significant impact on security, include provision of energy resources, constraints on freedom of the seas, and possible use of raw materials in new forms of conflict.

Essays on major regions of the world include Europe, where integrative prospects and precision weaponry demonstrate possibilities of strategic shifts. The Middle East is depicted as an arena of diminishing Soviet successes and where the Suez Canal reopening is seen as a political advantage for the United States. The compendium concludes with an analysis of the juncture of four major world powers in Northeast Asia.

The essays contributed to this work are authored by officers and professional civilians of the US Army War College faculty. General Maxwell D. Taylor's impressions of the selections are presented in the foreword.

NEW DYNAMICS IN NATIONAL STRATEGY should be of significant interest to students of political science, economists, and individuals concerned with a deeper perspective and explanation of the issues facing our policy leaders.
