The Korean War (előszó)

On June 25, 1950 the civil war broke out in the Korean peninsula and quickly became a large-scale international conflict with the direct participation of the United States, the People's Republic of China, and other countries. Even though the armistice agreements brought an end to the hostilities on July 27, 1953, this three-year war not only affected every aspect of life in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), but also changed the global and regional political order. In commemoration of the war's 40th anniversary, the Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies at Claremont McKenna College held a conference on the Korean War in April 1990. The conference was co-sponsored by The Korea Times (Los Angeles).

The conference was designed to offer a number of retrospective assessments of the Korean War, especially in regard to its developments and consequences. The six papers presented at this meeting generated a great deal of debates and discussions among its participants. In order to share the substantive aspects of such debates and discussions with other interested people, the Keck Center has decided to edit and publish a volume of the six papers as revised.

I would like to express my appreciation to President Jack Stark, Vice President Donald Henriksen and Dean Ralph Rossum for their guidance and encouragement, to President and Publisher Jae Min Chang of The Korea Times for his generous financial support, and to Mrs. Mary Anderson and Mr. Talmadge O'Neill for their able assistance. I also wish to thank Professors David Arase, John Duncan, Kong Dan Oh, Michael Robinson, Arthur Rosenbaum, and William Tow for their participation in the conference as discussants. Above all, I remain deeply grateful to the W. M. Keck Foundation, which has supported the Center's diverse academic activities over the years.

It should be pointed out that each individual author is solely responsible for the contents of his paper and that he does not represent the views of the Center, the Keck Foundation, or The Korea Times.
