MIDDLETON, Harry J. : The compact history of the Korean War (fülszöveg)

"In war there can be no substitute for victory," said General Douglas Mac Arthur. In 1951 these words touched a national nerve and emerged as the drum call of the Korean War. But there was a substitute for victory; and it became the trend in warfare and national policy – the substitute being war waged for limited objectives, rather than total defeat of the enemy.

Harry J. Middleton in The Compact History of the Korean War tells in en-grossing narrative style of this costly, unresolved, but tremendously important conflict. He gives a graphic battle-by-battle account of the infamous invasion of South Korea by the North Korean Communists, as well as a startling picture of the political action behind the scenes and the resulting new concepts of twentieth-century warfare.

The reader relives with the American fighting man the days of the advance of the Communist invaders in 1950, the Pusan perimeter of defense set up by General MacArthur, the invasion at Inchon, the Allied advance into North Korea, the intervention of the Chinese Communists, and finally, the truce talks at Panmunjom.

Numerous campaign and battle maps by B. C. Mossman highlight this compelling and well-written book, which not only gives the reader an objective account of the war, but generates an evermounting excitement about the actions themselves and the emotions of the combatants.

Readers will long remember the author's vivid descriptions of ill-prepared troops fighting a brutal enemy whose numbers always seemed to increase, of the damp and cold of the ridges on which they fought, of the brainwashing by their captors, and of the cunning Communist strategy at the peace tables.

Most significant among all the author's well-documented conclusions are those that concern the roles of General MacArthur, President Truman, the United Nations and the Soviet Union. The American combat leaders are praised and criticized for the parts they played, as are the American soldiers and Marines, whose attitude has been under question since the war.

The book brings to life the horror of the war in terms of the soldiers who did the fighting, and at the same time it presents a clear picture of the military strategy and diplomatic intrigue employed by the men who directed the action.

An appendix is included listing the names of the Medal of Honor Awards given to American participants in the conflict.
