VARHOLA : Fire and ice (ajánló)

On June 25, 1950, more than 90,000 soldiers from communist North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and swept into South Korea, overrunning its lightly armed forces and driving quickly toward the undefended capital city of Seoul. More than a dozen members of the United Nations responded by sending naval, air, and ground forces to intervene on behalf of the crumbling Republic of Korea. For more than three years, a force composed mainly of Americans and South Koreans battled the armies and air forces of North Korea, Communist China (and, to a lesser extent, the Soviet Union). Nearly 2,000,000 Americans served in or around Korea, and some 33,000 were killed during the thirty-seven months of the conflict that has become known as "the Forgotten War."

Fire and Ice is a detailed overview of the conflict in Korea, from the hectic back-and-forth fighting of the first year to the static combat of the last. Subjects covered in this book include major military operations; the U.S., South Korea, North Korean, Chinese, and U.N. ground, air, and sea forces; the civilian and military leadership on both sides; weapons, vehicles, and equipment; prisoners of war; and the armistice negotiations.

In addition, Fire and Ice is enhanced with numerous photographs, maps, and illustrations to help readers visualize the major actions and events of the Korean War. A media section completes this unique book, guiding readers through further exploration of the Korean War in other published works, films, and on the World Wide Web (including a companion to the book hosted by KoreanWar.net).
