Dear NAFSA and OSEAS colleagues,
It is with great pleasure and pride that I would like to share with you the latest OSEAS update.
1996 marks the 10th anniversary of OSEAS as a professional section in NAFSA and we hope you will join us for a celebration toast in Phoenix at the OSEAS Open House on Wednesday, June 5th from 6-7:30 pm.
We also hope that you will participate in as many OSEAS related sessions and events as possible throughout the conference and take advantage of this unique opportunity to network with overseas educational advisers who will be in Phoenix this year.
OSEAS advisers at over 400 USIA-affiliated advising centers around the world are often the window on US higher education for many of the 400,000 plus international students presently studying in the States.
Over the last ten years, OSEAS has evolved into a highly sophisticated group of international education professionals who serve side by side with their NAFSA colleagues as presenters, trainers, organizers, chairs, leaders and liaisons at both the regiona
l and national level. They interact with and relate to every section within NAFSA - ADSEC, CAFSS, SECUSSA, ATESL, COMSEC - yet retain their uniqueness as "OSEAS" professionals.
Back in 1986, OSEAS educational advisers gathered together at various regional workshops to begin formulating a definition of what it IS that we advisers actually do. An OSEAS Code of Ethics (the first within NAFSA) was also established.
Today, OSEAS-Europe, one of the six OSEAS regions, has produced its own homepage under coordination of Dr. Ildiko Ficzko, OSEAS Europe ECE Board Member and Educational Adviser from Hungary.
This outstanding reference tool has a section on "What is OSEAS?" which lists the OSEAS Code of Ethics, articles on the profession of advising and an updated version of the definition of the Profession of Advising. It also gives information on the var
ious European advising centers and their educational systems.

Let 1996 be a year of Pro-Action for OSEAS - Join us in saluting the profession of overseas educational advising and voice your support for OSEAS. Help us overcome pending budget cuts and shutdowns which threathen our worldwide network. Remember the vit
al link that OSEAS provides in supporting international exchange both to and from the US. Let's work together to ensure another exciting decade for OSEAS and NAFSA international education professionals.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Levinson, OSEAS-Europe Board Chair, 1996-97 OSEAS/NAFSA Overseas
Coordinator, 1996-98
