The American College of Thessaloniki
WWW: http://www.anatolia.edu.gr/act/
The American College of Thessaloniki is a small (approximately 750 total
enrollment) private liberal arts college with a substantial
upper-division business component--75% of each entering class eventually
chooses to major in one of its three business degree programs: Business
Administration, European Business Studies, or Computer-Management
Information Systems. The remaining 25% of each class major in one of our
B.A. programs: English Language and Literature, History and International
Relations, or Psychology. In common with many liberal arts colleges both
within and outside the continental United States, at ACT the first two
years of study are largely devoted to the completion of a core curriculum
of introductory-level courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and
Mathematics, Computer Science and the Natural/Physical Sciences.
Originally established in 1981 by the Board of Trustees as the tertiary
educational division of an old and highly-respected Greek secondary
school, Anatolia College, ACT operated for ten years (1981-1991) as an
associate degree-granting institution. During that decade the school
maintained articulation agreements with over 20 U.S. colleges and
universities so that graduates could continue on for their B.A. or B.S.
degrees in the States. In 1991 ACT introduced a third year of
instruction, and its first baccalaureate class received their degrees in
June 1993. The most recent graduating class numbered over 120; of these,
around 40% began graduate study in either Great Britain or the United
States in the semester following graduation.
The school's mission and goals, which are those of a traditional small
college in the U.S. (ACT is accredited by the New England Association of
Schools and Colleges Commission on Institutions of Higher Education, as
its U.S. home base and Board of Trustees have their permanent home in
Boston), directly inform its philosophy towards teaching and learning.
All classes are small (maximum allowable enrollment: 25; average class
size: 19), the lecture-discussion approach to teaching is explicitly
encouraged among faculty (and supported by an active, ongoing faculty
development program which is designed to enhance approaches to the
teaching of small, student-centered college classes), and final grades
are based on a variable mix of continuous assessment tools: preparation
and participation in class discussion, intensive and extensive writing
(the College has had a Writing Across the Curriculum program since 1997),
special projects, and presentations to fellow class members, as well as
the more traditional assessment tools of midterm examinations and
finals. ACT prides itself on the quality of its classroom interchange
amongst students and faculty. The latter are young, well-trained
academics and professionals, all of whom have completed either their
undergraduate or graduate education (or both) in Great Britain or the
United States.
The school is located on a pine-covered 45-acre campus above
Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city. Situated midway between the
two northern suburbs of Pylea and Panorama, the campus-with its three
classroom buildings, three online computer laboratories, a library of
30,000 volumes and over 2000 academic and scholarly journals in
electronic format, gymnasium, and outdoor athletic facilities-affords
students an easy commute from central locations in the city itself, where
ACT facilitates students' rental of affordable dormitory and
efficiency-apartments.
Over the past three years, the College has gradually increased its
population of international students, who today compose 20% of the total
student body. Some 150 international students from 19 countries are
enrolled during the 1999-2000 academic year as degree students. This
increase has been made possible by ACT's having become better known both
in its own region of Europe as well as in the United States, to a
lessening of tensions between Greece and its nearby Balkan neighbor
states, and to the key role designated for Thessaloniki, as the city
prepares to assume the mission of financial, commercial and development
headquarters of the Balkan region over the next decade. The resurgence of
the city as an important international banking, investment and trading
center ensures that international students studying at ACT feel at ease
not only within the school's confines but off campus as well.
ACT offers many benefits to an international student seeking an American
education, in particular to those desirous of remaining somewhat closer
to their homeland during their college years than would be possible if
they traveled to the U.S. itself. In addition to its all-English
curriculum and programs, which prepare students both for immediate entry
into the work force as well as for postgraduate study in Great Britain
and the U.S., its central location within easy access of all of Europe,
north Africa, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union states, ACT's
tuition has remained far more affordable for international students than
tuition at comparable undergraduate institutions stateside. Tuition and
fees for a full-time, degree-seeking student were under $4000 U.S. for
the 1999-2000 academic year, and will remain at comparable levels in
2000-2001. Additional costs for housing, food and incidental expenses
seldom exceed $500 U.S. monthly.
We would be very happy to forward to you a number of informational
materials regarding the American College of Thessaloniki, including the
school's current Catalogue of Study, which presents its curriculum,
degree programs and course offerings in considerable detail. To request
these materials, or for additional information, please feel free to
contact either Deborah Brown Kazazis (dbkazazi@ac.anatolia.edu.gr),
Academic Dean or the College's Director of Admissions, Ms. Roula
Lebetli (rleb@ac.anatolia.edu.gr).
You may also visit Anatolia College's
web site at www.anatolia.edu.gr,
which already provides ACT application
materials for downloading and printing. Over the next few months, ACT
will be constructing its own pages to be linked to those of the mother
institution, and most of the information available in the Catalogue (in
addition to program developments and initiatives under way) will also be
available online.
