Introduction to the Athens Conference Report

George Dariotis, On-Site Member of Conference Organizing Committee

Dear friends,

The final report of the Athens OSEAS-Europe 5th Educational Advising Conference is the final chapter of the whole endeavor, which was conceived during the previous conference at La Grande Motte, France in 1991.

Many worked on making this Conference happen. At this point I need to mention those who provided invaluable hours in the planning of the Conference:
The Planning Committee which comprised of the following: Ms. Terhi Molsa, of the Finland-US Educational Exchange Commission, who served as chair, Ms. Ildiko Ficzko of the Jozsef Attila University, Szeged, Hungary, Ms. Lynne Lerner of the Netherlands-America Commission for Educational Exchange, Ms. Marvi Pulver of the University of Tartu, Estonia, Mr. John Hopkins of the University of Tampere, Finland, and myself. Ms. Evelyn Levinson of the US-Israel Educational Foundation was not on the original planning committee but volunteered her assistance early on in the planning and worked hard with all the rest in the planning of the Conference. Mr. Mark Lazar and Ms. Mary Kirk, both from IIE-Budapest, also joined the planning committee in the final stages of the planning.

The Planning Committee worked closely with Ms. Catherine Sevcenko and Ms. Alexandra Hattemer of USIA's E/ASA branch. Without their assistance, and support -both moral and monetary - such a Conference could not have taken place.

The Executive Director and the staff of the U.S. Educational Foundation in Greece, - the Fulbright Program - namely Mr. William R. Ammerman, Ms. Ioanna Zografou, Ms. Sophia Cousoula, Ms. Nanita Papoulia, Ms. Christina Athanasopoulou, Ms. Angie Fotaki, and Ms. Anna Gratsas. Dimitri Doutis, the Foundation's adviser in Northern Greece also assisted with the tasks that befell the Foundation in hosting such an event.

Ms. Corrie Schweigler from the University of Munich assisted the Planning Committee after the Conference in collecting and editing all the session minutes from the reporters electronically. Some of the sessions were covered by more than one reporter, thus for some of the you will find more than one report. It was the decision of the Planning Committee to keep all the minutes and not edit them into one to show how all worked on this project. You will notice the names of the minute takers under each session title. All reporters were advisers who volunteered to cover the sessions.

This report also includes samples of evaluation forms which participants completed and returned to the Planning Committee on the last day of the Conference. Unfortunately not all were in a condition that could permit copying so that they could be included in this report. The same holds true with all the post-Conference communications that members of the Planning Committee received. Some came by mail, some by official cable, some over the Internet, some via fax. Only a small sample has been duplicated here .

Numerous others assisted in various aspects of this Conference, but space does not permit to list all who worked in making the 5th European Educational Advising Conference the success it was. Speaking for the Planning Committee, and on behalf of the US Ed ucational Foundation in Greece I thank you all.

My personal best wishes to all that I had the opportunity to work with on this project and to all that came to Athens for the 5th European Educational Advising Conference - our Conference.
