Beyond East-West Matching: Developing Lasting and Effective Mentoring

This session discussed the definition of mentoring using concrete examples such as East-West Matching Programs, NIS Mentoring Project. Many of the participants shared their own experiences and talked about the needs for founding future initiatives. All th
e advisers can work together and share experiences.
At the session the definition of "mentor" was given: "A mentor provides information, advice, and supports for a junior person in a relationship lasting over an extended period of time, marked by substantial emotional commitment of both partners."
Marvi Pulver, one of the speakers, pointed out some episodes from her experience.

After some time she continued her work, wrote some articles and a handout "How to Write a Personal Statement."

At this session there were 22 advisers from NIS. Mette Rhode-Larsen said that there were going to be changes in mentoring programs. She asked NIS advisers to take part in mentoring.
Alexandra Hattemer told about the funding and budget. East-West Matching Programs funds only travel. She asked all the advisers to send her some ideas, a small budget. Money is available for e-mail. The Program will be continued.
REAC gives information about the regions. It is very important to inform everybody about your job.
West-European advisers can learn from NIS advisers. All advisers can learn and teach. When you begin your work, it is very important to have a mentor, and institutional communication is very useful. For NIS mentoring, traveling is very important.
