OSEAS-EUROPE BOARD

The new Board of OSEAS-Europe has been selected. By the 30 November 1995 deadline, 5 eligible advisers were nominated for the 5 available positions in the new Board, one person for each position. This means that we can fill all five positions without a vo ting.

All nominations were made appropriately and received by both me as well as Linda Callihan at NAFSA, as required by the elections guidelines.

The term of the new Board will start in May/June 1996. The Board has six members. TERHI MOLSA will serve as the Immediate Past Chair. The newly elected five other members of the Board are:

For the first time OSEAS Europe has a democratically elected Board.

First tasks of the new Board

Even though the term of the new Board will start only next spring, the Board will immediately start to prepare for their term and to work on a number of issues regarding OSEAS-Europe.

First of course, the Board will need to organize itself, decide on various responsibilities within the Board, and decide on the ways the Board members will work and communicate with each other.

The Board will then start working on other fundamental issues, starting with reviewing the mission statement of OSEAS-Europe and suggesting modifications if necessary.

Among its very first tasks the Board will also work on the by- laws of OSEAS-Europe. As you know, the new structure of OSEAS- Europe that was approved this Fall is only a start. The Board may wish to develop the structure considerably.

The Board will also start working on the agenda for their term in good time before their term actually starts. In this context the Board will seek input from European advisers and other relevant parties. At the same time the Board will also form a netw ork of "activists" broader than the Board alone. In other words, the Board may invite ex-officio members to the Board, and possibly appoint also other people to act as "liaisons" or to work on special projects, or whatever the Board will consider relevant and necessary. NB! This means that if you'd like to offer your time and effort in any project or issue which you consider important please let the Board members know about it now! Contact any of th em! Your participation is very welcome!

The Board, headed by the new Chair, Evelyn Levinson, will inform on all of its plans for its term as thoroughly as possible. So please follow the discussion on OSEAS-Europe electronic list. Also, please remember to forward any relevant messages to thos e of your adviser colleagues who do not have e-mail and, thus, cannot subscribe to the OSEAS-Europe list.

The new Board has been selected democratically and following an approved procedure. However, we hope that the "official-sounding" terms and titles do not intimidate anyone. This is still the same old "European advising family" we're talking about here. Anyone who is interested can be and should feel a part of it. The official structure has been created only to help us -- to assist us in organizing ourselves and our activities better, and to represent ourselves more efficiently beyond our own forum. Thu s, regardless of whether you are or are not on the Board of OSEAS-Europe, you have the same possibilities to have your voice and concerns heard and initiate projects. The idea is that with the new structure and the new Board we can now do that even better than before.

Based on the message of Terhi Molsa (NAFSA's OSEAS-Europe Regional Representative 1994-96) sent to OSEAS-Europe e-mail list on December 4, 1995. Updated with changes in the Board in 1996.
