RECOGNIZED ACCREDITING ASSOCIATIONS FOR DEGREE PROGRAMS
by Dr. Amy Kirle Lezberg,
alezberg@aol.com
These associations are recognized by one or all three of the following: The
US Department of Education, CHEA (Council for Higher Education Accreditation),
or ASPA (Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors). Recognition
by the US Department of Education is contingent upon an association being a
“gatekeeper” for federal funds, eliminating accrediting bodies which require
their member programs to be housed in regionally accredited institutions (for
example, AACSB, ACPE). Membership in CHEA requires that 50% or more of the member
institutions of an accrediting body grant a degree in higher education (at the
Associate, Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral level) Thus, for example, associations
like the ADA (American Dental Association) the majority of whose member may
be internship sites rather than degree-granting entities, are not eligible for
membership.
I have divided the accrediting bodies into three categories (E
= recognized by the Department of Education; © = membership in CHEA; (A) = membership
in ASPA):
