Fundraising in Greece: A Success Story

This session was devoted to how the Foundation in Greece raised money for the program in addition to the funds provided by the U.S. and Greek governments.

The entire office was involved: The Executive Director, Chip Ammerman, was behind the effort; Sophie Cousoula, executive secretary was very involved with the legalities, doing all the legwork with the national bank, etc.
They presented a step-by-step plan for the entire process - when to begin, whom to approach and the legal aspects of any funds donated.

The American ambassador in Greece has also been very involved and has invited prominent businessmen to cocktail parties on a number of occasions.

Through this tactic, they have raised $1,200,000, which is deposited in a fund. Extra grants are given from the interest earned.

The following is their step-by-step plan:

1. Identify the problem and areas of need

a. more grants
b. new copy machines
c. video/computer etc.
d. brochure on Fulbright program (their handout was their own "Fulbright Program in Greece"-funded by a major American Airline Company-discretely noted on inside back cover)

a. Write letter to "the chosen" explaining the problem at least six months in advance
b. Send invitation to cocktail parties after the letter

a. Chamber of Commerce or "American Club"
b. Foundation Board of Directors-any contacts?
c. Alumni
d. U.S. companies, locally based-tax-free status?

a. Are donations tax-free for both individuals and companies?
b. Are there any problems with USIA?
c. Problems/legalities with national bank?
