Survival Management for Busy Advising Centers: Strategies and Techniques

Session Chair Ildiko Ficzko said that based on the experience of two different advising centers (a two-person center and one of the largest) we intend to demonstrate how adviser can organize the operation of their offices to be able to work in the most ef fective way.

Audrone said the main rules which are related to successful management of EAC are:
- be informative
- be professional
- be well organized
- be welcoming to people.

EAC services are:
- information
- testing
- Soros sponsored study abroad programs

Last year there were more than 1857 visitors to the Center

I. Information Management
- For registration of students there is a specially-designed entry program -using FOXPRO.

During office hours:
- group lectures
- CD search
- individual extended consultations.

Folders of methodically organized printed materials:
- US universities
- entry procedures
- European and other countries
- grant opportunities in a specially arranged format.
- Special organization of general and university catalogues
- folder for short-term courses

Usage of software

II. Strategies of Effective Advising:

- Information efficiency
- Time management
- Good handouts
- More extensive usage of software
- More information through media and liaison trips to universities in the area, joint seminars with other grant giving and administrative institutions.
