Room was arranged to provide projected image of computer onto overhead screen. Each keystroke was then able to be followed by participants to simulate hands-on experience.

Information services:
This was an information session about the wonders of Gopher. Reference was made to an excellent article by Marvy Pulver.
This was followed by an introduction to the World Wide Web (WWW) browser. The WWW is a graphical tool for display of images (a text-based version is available).
Explanation of gopher -software that allows archiving of documents to be read on-line in read-only document form or searched for by keyword (i.e. microsig directories or OSEAS database). Documents can be copied electronically and downloaded onto e-mail fo
r mailing to yourself or others.
The International Education Forum was entered on screen and an explanation of the menu provided:

The gopher menu, at the top menu level, includes an introduction, links, new user training, etc. Reference was made to the NAFSA gopher, Erasmus gopher, EAIE gopher, CEPES-UNESCO gopher, etc.
The search tool was examined first. Search done by key word:
- Enter word into box, i.e. "Pulver"
- An article appeared on screen by Marvi Pulver
- There was a quick check on an article using CD ROM, in educational advising
- Text follows.
- Can be read on screen or searched through by key word
At this point, using Netscape software, the screen was exited out of.
- Send mail feature was used and the document was sent to the address specified.
The keyboardist then moved back to the main screen
- Athens conference directory.
- The participant listing update was retrieved.
- A demonstration of word search was given using the word [Rice].
- Under the Netscape software [edit] was chosen[enter]
- Craig Rice information was brought up on screen.
The keyboardist then backed out of the document again.
Brief discussion about the document, online statistics, and what other information is available online, ie press releases etc.
Then advising articles were retrieved:
gopher://gopher.csc.fi/0/00/other/IntEdu/Oseas/Advise/cruise.up
A demonstration of how these articles could be downloaded and stored in individual databases for use later.
Various titles were read from names on the screen. Reference was made to CD ROM's Admissions advising. article from Marvi in gopherspace - currently only available on email.

Handout was distributed which showed the construction of this home page.
WEB explanation using home page from Hungary as example;
Photo displayed, showing where the office is located.
If anyone requests a handout, access home page to see if it is available. If it is, send a request. It will be forwarded.
Demonstration of the use of Hypertext (linkages between highlighted words and other text files). Each highlighted word can be queried for more detail about that subject.
Pictures can be displayed as images.
When many documents are connected to one link, you might need to use a menu.
There is a lot of detailed information which can be made available on the WEB.
Texts are linked together through subfields, which can be used together.
Personal advisor page included for advisors sake. Addresses of colleagues can be included. This is all possible through WEB access, via the university home page.
Direct, immediate information can be provided - available by state, region, category of study, etc.
At this point there numerous questions from the audience, most relating to technical details including
- How long did it take? Answer: about six weeks on a part time, when time was available basis
CD-ROM demonstration:
PETERSONS DATABASE is an organized collection of information. Complete records are called fields. An overview of the database, for which an instruction manual would accompany the purchased program, were given.
With Peterson's Database there are three ways to search for information:
1) By single word, number of records given.
2) Index [F5]. Type in word and the index will be provided automatically. Mark the particular record in which you have interest.
3) Going into the records, then key words are highlighted and can be marked For each of these three search methods the results are the same.
Too wide or too narrow searches require that connectors or operators are needed.
[F1] is the help key.
Two types of handouts were provided - College Database and Gradline.
Individual tutorials were offered. The session ended at 6:30 pm.
