DORNBUSCH : Histories, personal narratives, United States Army (előszó)

Well over a thousand additional titles and periodical references justify a revision of Histories of American Army Units, World Wars I and II and Korean Conflict, with some earlier histories, 1956. The work has been a reproach to its compiler in the absence of title numbering and location of copies as well as the not too precise description of illustrative material.

The Checklist is presented in 2742 continuously numbered entries arranged alphabetically by the unit's designation and then in numexical sequence by the unit's number. Starred numbers resolve duplication of numbering, lapses by the typist-compiler.

The Checklistis Addenda presents additional entries numbered with the addition of a letter to indicate their proper location in the Checklist. References in the Checklist direct attention to Addenda entries.

A complete repoxting of location of copies has not been possible though the information is in the compiler's files. One large repository, the Office, Chief of Military History, Washington "cannot be shown as a source. The publications held by this office actually comprise a reference collection for official use in furnishing historical data to the Department of the Army staff and to U.S. Army units."

The monthly Unit Histories published December 1952 – March 1959 by the Army Library Service evidences The New York Public Library's acquisition program sparked by the writer. I fear that many of these titles have not surmounted the hurdles of processing to reach the shelves and attain entry in The New York Public Lihrary catalogues.

Numerous titles are held by private collectors, the John Page Nicholsons for the unit histories of World Wars I and II. Again and again titles from these collections have brought from the Natiqnal Union Catalogue the report "no locations."

I have little desire for a return to a library's hurly-burly where the obtaining of material is a physical effort. Furthermore no financial support has been forthcoming for such a program. Thus, except for titles which have passed through my hands as a book dealer, the description of illustrative material is little improved from the earlier volume.

The record of Civil War unit histories, the Bibliography of State Participation in the Civil War, appeared in three editions. The third edition of 1913 was followed by the writer's Regimental Histories and Personal Narratives of the Civil War whose first volume appeared in 1962. A supplement is now under consideration for this work.

With this record for the bibliography of an earlier war's unit histories, I make no pretensions for the completeness of the Checklist. Continuing efforts toward that objective, I would welcome correspondence reporting new titles and suggesting improvements in the Checklist.
