CONNOLLY : Greece and Rome at war (fülszöveg)

Greece and Rome at War is a comprehensive account of the military development of Greece and Rome from the 8th century BC to the fall of the Roman empire in the middle of the 5th century AD. It studies, period by period, the organisation, tactics, armour and weapons of the phalanx and the legion. There are also sections on Mediterranean navies and the evolution of siege warfare.

At the core of the book is an account of the campaigns of Hannibal, Rome's greatest adversary, which throws new light on such controversial topics as the route the Carthaginian general took over the Alps, and the site of the battle of Lake Trasimene.

Greece and Rome at War is illustrated in colour throughout with Peter Connolly's superb artwork, which covers the whole range of classical warfare: critical moments from the great battles and sieges; detailed breakdowns of cavalry and infantry formations; and a wealth of armour and weaponry. The author's deep knowledge of ancient arms and armour and the technical problems of their manufacture and subsequent use in the field—often the result of his own painstaking experiments in reconstruction—is here allied to his skill as an artist, often throwing an old archaeological problem into a fresh perspective.

In addition two leading authorities have contributed sections on their particular fields. Dr Brian Dobson writes about the Praetorian Guard, and Dr Roger Tomlin provides an analysis of the military history of the later Roman empire.
