KETCHUM : The winter soldiers (fülszöveg)

As if by design, the glorious autumn days of 1776 gave the British time to deliver a crushing blow. To destroy the fragile enterprise of American independence, George III's government had assembled the greatest expeditionary force ever sent out from the shores of Great Britain, including the world's largest fleet and an army of trained, disciplined redcoats and Hessians.

New York fell. George Washington's army began its anguished retreat through New Jersey. Winter came on with a vengeance, bringing the dark days described by Thomas Paine as "the times that try men's souls," when the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot shrank from support of their newly independent country.

THE WINTER SOLDIERS is the story of a tiny band of men held together by George Washington in the face of disaster and despair, struggling to survive, desperately needing at least one victory to salvage both cause and country.

In a richly detailed account of events before and after the Declaration of Independence, Richard M. Ketchum portrays the critical situation of the Continental Army which, at low ebb, numbered only 1,200 men. In the background are the deliberations and angry debates in both houses of Parliament, the soul searching among thoughtful Americans that determined which side they would take in a vicious civil war. But above all, this is the story of Washington and his army and the unbelievable hardship and suffering that culminated in the battles of Trenton and Princeton – triumphs that had results far beyond the number of troops involved. Without this achievement, the rebellion which had begun so bravely could not have gone on. Without the sacrifices, it is hard to see how the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence could have become reality.
