PALMER : The way of the fox (fülszöveg)

The Revolutionary War was a long war, with four phases so distinct as to resemble separate wars. Each phase presented a different set of circumstances, and each demanded a different strategic solution. In a struggle of such complexity, victory for the Revolutionaries could hardly be expected to happen of its own accord; victory would have to be caused. How competent was the American strategy?

Seeking answers, Dave Richard Palmer conducts his investigations in logical sequence. To evaluate strategy, one must comprehend the factors to which strategy responds. So, in six separate but connecting essays, prevailing conditions are examined: the conflict's wilderness setting, the tactics of the time, the limitations of weaponry, and the dual goals of independence and territorial expansion.

Then, General Washington's strategic conduct of the war is given an objective and systematic appraisal, phase by phase and campaign by campaign. In that running reconstruction, there is sound and fascinating evidence of superb strategic skills in George Washington, skills that other historians have ignored or barely touched upon.

Palmer's study submits that Washington as strategist deserves far higher ratings than have been given by those who see him, simplistically, as a one-sided and defensive Fabiran general.
