The Blue and the Gray (fülszöveg)

Many wars have been fought since America became a nation, but it is the Civil War that has left the strongest impression on our minds and in our hearts. It furnishes us with our greatest heroes, civil and military; it establishes our standards of patriotism and heroism; and it remains the classic demonstration of the American character in time of crisis.

In the two volumes of The Blue and the Gray, Henry Steele Commager presents the story of the Civil War in the words of those who were there. He evokes the collective memory of a whole generation — the Federals, the Confederates, officers, privates, nurses, and civilians — to re-create the war in all its aspects.

What gives particular value and interest to The Blue and the Gray is that it embraces not only every major campaign and battle on land and on sea but almost every other side of the conflict as well. Here the reader will find the story of recruiting, discipline, life in camp and on the march, arms and ordnance, medicine and surgery, prison life, religious revivals, politics and diplomacy, and life behind the lines, North and South. Here is the story of the fighting, what made the fighting possible, and what went on in between battles and campaigns.

From this vast storehouse of Civil War literature, the editor has culled some 450 substantial accounts, ranging from the most familiar to the most obscure. He has drawn from letters, journals, diaries, memoirs, official records, state papers, and many other sources. All these are arranged to tell a connected story of the war from the time that Abraham Lincoln was nominated at Chicago's Wigwam and the Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter to the time that Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theatre and the Stars and Stripes were raised once more over the battered fort.

Each of the thirty-one chapters has an introduction designed to explain the particular campaign or issue presented. Each excerpt and narrator is introduced with appropriate commentary. The two volumes constitute the most comprehensive historical source book of Civil War history around.
