MACLEAR : Vietnam : The ten thousand day war (fülszöveg)

At 7.53 on the morning of 30 April 1975, the last helicopter took off from the United States embassy compound in Saigon, bound for a waiting aircraft-carrier in the South China Sea. After thirty years – more than ten thousand days – the Vietnam War was over.

Since 1945, when Ho Chi Minh tumed his attention from the Japanese to the returning French colonial rulers, the Vietnamese Communists had waged an unremitting struggle to unite Vietnam under the Marxist banner. In turn, the French, the South Vietnamese and the Americans had fought to prevent them – and lost.

The Vietnam War was the longest war in modern history. It raised political passion and moral controversy throughout the West, and played an important part in shaping the political destiny not only of South-East Asia, but of the whole world. Its origins and course are complex.

There have been many books on the War, but only now, six years after the end, have the perspectives settled, and made it possible to look at events in a wider context than the nationalism which concerned the participants. There is still much misunderstanding of the true reasons for the War, and Michael Maclear's book does much to clarify the issues involved. It is the first book to take a comparative approach, having access to records from both sides of the War and able to draw on a uniquely wide range of sources, including Communist archives in Hanoi. Researched while the author was preparing the definitive television history of the War, the book includes more original material and interviews with participants at all levels, than any previous work on the subject.

The Ten Thousand Day War brings together the thoughts and comments of those who were opponents so few years ago. It emphasises new findings and discusses the interviews included, but at the same time remains a complete and self-contained history of the War for those who know nothing of these complicated events.
