Through popular fiction and films, phrases litre "in country," "back in the world" and "Good Morning Vietnam" have become part of our lexicon – but their origin and meaning are sometimes unclear. In the Field: The Language of the Vietnam War is the first A-to-Z guide to almost 5,000 terms from the extraordinary vocabulary of the American soldier who fought in this conflict.
Included here are hundreds of acronyms, nicknames, code names, brand names, the names of significant events and campaigns, technical terms and other slang. While some military phrases may be familiar from other wars, most are unique to Vietnam. Also of interest are the Vietnamese words and phrases picked up by the GIs, as well as terms relating to what was happening back home.
