RUTLEDGE – RUTLEDGE : In the presence of mine enemies (fülszöveg)

On November 27, 1965 Captain Howard E. Rutledge parachuted into the hands of the North Vietnamese when his fighter plane exploded under heavy antiaircraft fire . . .

On November 28, 1965 Phyllis Rutledge heard the shattering news that her husband was missing in action . . .

For the next seven years Howard and Phyllis Rutledge faced the loneliness of separation . . . the misery of not knowing. . . . Here is the gripping, personal story of two brave, resourceful people whose faith and love sustained them through a horrible, seven-year nightmare.

Captain Rutledge explicitly recounts his experiences in enemy hands from the moment of his capture by a vengeful group of North Vietnamese villagers to the moment of his release. He describes the repulsive conditions of the prisons where he was held, including the notorious "Hanoi Hilton". . . the brutality of prison guards and interrogators . . . the unbearable loneliness of solitary confinement. He also shares those things which helped him to endure life in prison – the ingenious communication systems among prisoners . . . clever mental exercices and pastimes . . . deep allegiance to the United States . . . and most important of all, a renewed faith in God which enabled him to maintain hope and to find things to be thankful for even in the midst of torture and deprivation.

Although Phyllis Rutledge suffered no physical torture, she experienced five years of mental anguish, not knowing if her husband was alive or dead; and two more years of constant waiting for his return. During this time she coped with the added responsibility and pressure of raising a family and making decisions on her own. She also faced alone the death of her mother and the tragic diving accident which left their teen-age son completely paralyzed. This remarkable woman openly shares her doubts, fears and problems during the long ordeal and shows how God provided strength and guidance when she needed it most.
