Throughout the last turbulent months of the Vietnam war, Frank Snepp, CIA analyst and operative for the Embassy in Saigon, accurately forecast each twist and turn of the screw. Yet when the end came in April 1975 the Ambassador and Kissinger's State Department were caught dangerously off guard. Only the heroism of a few young Embassy officers and the ingenuity of the Defense Attaché saved the final American evacuation from total disaster, and even then thousands upon thousands of Vietnamese who had faithfully served the Americans over the years were abandoned to the not so tender mercies of the Corrmunist victors.
Here, for the first time -- from the vantage point of one in the bull's-eye -- is the story of what happened, from the daring efforts of the young officers who salvaged the evacuation, to the duplicity and subterfuge of the French, the Soviets and the Hungarians who helped to blind the Ambassador and top CIA officials to the meaning of the intelligence. Never before has the subtle interplay of espionage and decision-making in an evolving crisis been so fully and tellingly explored.
But more than a story of Saigon's demise, this is a deeply personal account of a young man's odyssey through the CIA's ambivalent and often brutal world. From the moment he returned to Vietnam in late 1972 Snepp was thrust into the vortex of this shadowy no man's land, interrogating prisoners, running agents, and finally trying to make sense of it all for proud and opinionated officiais who could not accept Saigon was lost. An accomplice in Thieu's own escape during the war's final days, he was also directly involved in an intelligence operation -- never before revealed -- which could have brought about the release of American prisoners of war even before the Paris peace agreement.
Though awarded the CIA's Medal of Merit for his performance in Vietnam, Snepp was obliged to resign from the agency -- and defied its censors in order to tell this story.
