More than 10 years have passed since America's war In Vietnam came to an end with the fall of Saigon, but important questions concerning the nature of the war and what lessons can be drawn from it are again the subject of intense debate. Today, more than ever before, Americans want to understand this pivotal and tragic episode in their history. The VIETNAM WAR ALMANAC, written by a renowned authority on the conflict, Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., is designed to help them do just that. Literally thousands of books and articles have been written about the war. What distinguishes the ALMANAC from other books on the subject is that it presents a wide range of objective information on every aspect of the conflict. Painstakingly researched and designed for easy access, the book takes into account all perspectives on the conflict and gives the reader the facts necessary to form his or her own conclusions.

The ALMANAC consists of three sections:

Part I provides an introductory history of Vietnam from ancient times until 1959 and describes the physical setting of the country. It also analyzes the significance of Vietnam's historical and physical realities in shaping American policy in the area.

Part II is a detailed chronology of military and political events – both in Vietnam and in America – from 1959 to the fall of Saigon in 1975.

Part III, the heart of the book, contains some 500 articles, arranged alphabetically, on the people, battles, weapons, controversial issues and key concepts of the conflict. Many of these articles include cross-references and suggestions for further reading for the person who seeks more in-depth information on a given topic.

Other features that complement the lucidly written text include a selective bibliography, 21 maps and more than 120 photographs.

The VIETNAM WAR ALMANAC has been designed to meet the needs of historians, journalists, foreign policy analysts, military personnel, students, veterans of the war – in short, anyone who wants an authoritative up-to-date source book that covers the military, political, diplomatic and social aspects of the war in Vietnam.
