Vietnam seen from east and west (fülszöveg)

The Vietnamese conflict, which began shortly after Japan's surrender to the Allies, is now more than twenty years old. Yet, certain basic questions remain unanswered: What kind of war is being fought in Vietnam? What are the deep undercurrents that have kept it going for so long? What are the chances for each side of winning – or not losing – the war? What is the basis for often conflicting viewpoints of East and West?

In an effort to answer these questions and to evaluate the complexities of the Vietnamese crisis, Sibnarayan Ray has brought together fifteen distinguished political analysts – including P. J. Honey, Hoang Van Chi, Arnold Beichman, Ton That Thien, Brian Crozier, and Robert A. Scalapino – who examine the nature of the war in Vietnam and its significance for Asia, Australia, and the West. After an introductory essay by Mr. Ray, which surveys the over-all situation in Vietnam and its importance in Southeast Asia, individual essays discuss the origins of the war, the problems and aspirations of the Vietnamese people, the larger context of Communist aggression and subversion in Asia, the policy and behavior of Mao's China, and the reasons for the failure of repeated efforts to negotiate peace in Vietnam. These are followed by a detailed analysis of the methods and techniques of revolutionary guerrilla warfare, covering everything from the operations of the Vietnamese Communist Party to the use of primitive panji sticks (sharpened bamboo stakes sown like mines around approaches to villages).

The concluding chapters compare the situation in Vietnam with the experiences of the Philippines, Laos, and Korea; analyze the global implications of the crisis in Vietnam; and examine the policies, attitudes, and conduct of India, Australia, and the United States.

"In Vietnam," writes Mr. Ray, "the most obvious threat is directed against the independence of the South Vietnamese, but the real issue is much bigger, involving the destiny of the peoples of South and Southeast Asia." In this comprehensive, in-depth analysis, representatives of East and West meet to grapple with the problem of Vietnam, and offer constructive suggestions for a strategy that could secure peace with freedom and social justice.
